When watching or playing hockey the rules of the game can be a bit confusing. In Hockey, there are many rules which one has to know if they are playing competitively. Each team can only have six skaters including the goalie on the ice at one time. Offside is a rule that is often confusing for new players. In order for a play to be onside, the puck must cross the blue line before any players cross it. Icing is when a team launches the puck down the ice from behind the red line. There are many other rules and penalties that we can get into but this is how penalties work. If a player commits a minor penalty, they will sit in the penalty box for two minutes while the opposing team gets a power play. This is the most common penalty. There are also double minors, which are four minutes. These are typically for high sticks that draw blood. Lastly, there are five-minute majors. These are reserved for when two players fight (yes you can do that) or when a player checks someone from behind and it results in injury. Those are the basic rules of the game.
