The number one thing that one should learn first when starting hockey is skating. Skating can be one of the most intimidating things to learn when getting started. In my personal experience, I had known to rollerblade before I started Ice skating so that definitely helped me in my case. If you have prior experience with roller skating, that definitely translates to the ice because it is the same principles and movements.
Learning to skate takes time. It took me some time. It takes commitment. Don't be afraid to fail, because you will. You will fall. That's ok, we all fall. When skating it's ok to hold onto the boards when you are starting out, however, don't do that too long. Force yourself out in the middle of the ice.
Be comfortable with being uncomfortable. It will feel like you are skating on knives. I suggest finding a rink locally and going there whenever you can. You will get out of it what you put in. Find a trainer who can teach you the basics and work with you. I will link a video that explains a lot of the basics in a great way. Happy Skating!
