Have you ever wondered why the hockey stick is considered to be the most important piece of equipment? It is because there are so many different ways in which a stick can be customized to a players liking. It starts with a sticks kickpoint. The kick point is the spot on the stick in which the stick flexes and energy is generated. A high kick point is designed for players who like to load up their shots. This kick point is typically best for defensemen who like to take slappers. A low kick point is meant for getting a quick release at the expense of some power. The players who use this kick point are typically forwards who take a lot of snapshots. Then the mid-kick point is a mix of the other two. This one is best for players who take a lot of different types of shots. Typically the more advanced you are, the less important the kick point is. However, for beginners it is vital. Next is stick flex. The flex number on the stick is the pounds of force it would take to flex the stick one inch. Typically you want to half your body weight to get the best flex for you. However, in my experience, a whippier stick is best. I'm 200lbs and I use an 85 flex. It is all up to the player. Sticks can be expensive but you can get good ones for relatively cheap.
